Choklate....

I intended to do this update about 4 days ago. Things just keep on happening yo.

Better late than never.

I don't have much to say about this artist, because I don't know much about her. I immediately saw the name Choklate and thought....how incredibly lame. But whats in a name? It should be about the music right? And the music was suprisingly very good.

She is a West Coast chic, and basically came up in the game thru meeting and working with different folks from Cali to Seattle, including hip-hop producer Jake One. After some work on compilations, and a 12 inch single feat Chali 2na of Jurassic 5, her full length self titled LP dropped on May 23rd.

I See The Sun/Flash The Message

So I get my hands on Vikter Duplaix's new, and yet to be released Stimulation EP. And immediately one thing jumps out at me

Track #2
"I See The Sun" feat Tye Tibbett and Greater Annointing.

Now I know they both have Philadelphia roots...(ha Roots...Philly....get it? Nevermind) but this pairing seems more than odd. Tye being the wildly energetic gospel phenom and Vikter being the smooth electronica/soul singer. So what do I do. I pop in the CD and here is what you have....

Changed

Growing up, my parents listened to almost NO secular music. Outside of Kenny G, Luther Vandross and Anita Baker, I can't think of one single artist, album or song I heard them play.

So as you can image, my gospel background was THICK, from hours upon hours of church, and music in the car, and music in the house. One artist that I really liked that I didnt even know I liked was the Hawkins Family...

So for a brief History Lesson...

Walter Hawkins...younger brother of Edwin Hawkins. In an attempt to raise money to send the Ephesian Church of God in Christ's youth choir, directed by Edwin Hawkins, to a convention in Washington, D.C., Walter helped the group record an album, Let Us Go into the House of the Lord. Although initial plans called for the album to be sold locally, it became an international success when a single, "Oh, Happy Day," sold more than a million copies. The group subsequently toured as the Edwin Hawkins Singers.

In the early '70s, Walter Hawkins left the group to pursue a career on his own. After earning a master's of divinity degree from the University of California in Berkeley, he founded the Love Center Church in Oakland. It was here where he recorded Love Alive 1, featuring his wife Tremaine Hawkins on much of the lead vocals. Even as a child I thought these songs were awesome, and as I grew up I would find out that the Hawkins Family were indeed trailblazers for gospel music. Not just because of "Oh Happy Day", but the style and modern R&B elements they brought to gospel music.

Having said all of this...I bring you, from the Walter Hawkins Love Alive 1 album, released in 1975, "Changed" feat Tremaine Hawkins.
