Life Is A Musical

In my humble opinion (not that it matters much) music has been sucking lately. Or maybe I've just been poor. Or a combination of both. But the month of August has brought the heat in more ways than one....(that was a clever, did you catch it? No? Ok).

On August 22nd, my favorite group of all time and my favorite producer of all time dropped albums. And on the 29th, my 2nd favorite hip hop group dropped an album. All top quality stuff I might add.

First, I will start with Outkast. The best hip hop group ever. Period. I don't care what you think. Every CD pushes the envelope and challenges you as a listener. Some folk don't like to be challenged. And those particular people suck.

The album (which serves as the soundtrack to the movie of the same name) Idlewild is best after seeing the movie. I was listening to the album a week before I saw the movie and I liked it. After seeing the movie....I love it. Everything comes into focus and has meaning. In some ways I don't consider it a normal Outkast album, more like a soundtrack (its really both), being that their are songs from other people (Macy Gray, Whild Peach) but they all fit into the theme that the film and album both carry. Big Boi and Dre and still doing their whole separate thing, but on the track that they team up on....Pure Magic. While the album lacks the cohesive flow of past albums, it makes up for it with outstanding musical, genre bending performances. I would say that if albums were water, instead of being a steady continuious flow....like a shower, this album is more like a barrage of multi-colored water ballons, each different, but impactful.

"A Bad Note "
"Call The Law"
"N2U "
"Hollywood Divorce"
"PJ & Rooster "
"Mutron Angel "

The point is that I can't stop listening to this CD....

Except to listen to The Roots new album, which will be the subject for tomorrow....

Title Track

Death Cab For Cutie makes what I refer to as beautifully depressing music...I used to go to sleep to this album about 3 years ago. They just release a new album called Plans, but I have yet to hear it.

From their album released in 2000 titled We Have The Facts And We're Voting Yes....

Flying High

I have never really been a huge Commodores fan. They cool. Don't love em...Don't hate em.

But I DO hate Lionel Richie. He is a joke in my mind. So after a heated discussion with a co-worker about how lame Lionel Richie. I decided to pull out the Commodores LP and listen to the funky Lionel, instead of the soft, sappy, corny Lionel of "Hello" fame (even tho I can argue that Lionel has always been a cornball...)

From the Commodores 1978 album Natural High, "Flying High".

Just The Way You Like It....

Its been awhile since I last posted anything. Things have been sort of hectic. I will update much more frequently in August, so be ready.

I attended a Fred Hammond concert last week, which I will talk more about in the next few days.

However, for today i will simply leave you with the title track from Compton's Most Wanted's debut album It's A Compton Thang

Which samples one of the smoothest songs ever made...

Just the way you like it.....
