Hero

Perhaps the most well known figure in gospel music for more than a decade, most people have a love him or hate him view of Mr. Kirk Franklin. He's too flashy, too worldly, etc, etc. And he is once again taking heat for admitting he once had an addiction to pornography. But one thing (most) people can't deny, is that Kirk as a writer, producer, arranger, performer....is one of the best in the game. His new release, Hero, is an exceptional piece of work.

Hero has some extremely personal songs, The CD begins with a chorus of children singing. Kirk reveals later that the children are from Africa and have all been orphaned due to AIDS or violence in Africa. "Let It Go" deals with abuse, strained family relationships and his addiction to pornography. But my 2 favorite songs are the uplifting "Why" feat Stevie Wonder, and "Imagine Me" which Kirk states at the end "This song is dedicated to people like me, those who struggle with insecurites, acceptance, and even self esteem. You never felt good enough, you never felt pretty enough....but imagine God whispering in your ear, letting you know that everything that has happened is now..... gone"

Powerful stuff

We all want the stuff...thats found in our wildest dreams....

Happy Holidays to all...

Well, I broke my almost 3 month CD purchasing drought. I couldnt take it anymore, no matter tight $$ is right now. I bought the Tom Vek CD (see entry below), Kirk Franklin's Hero CD, and I bought another copy of my favorite album of all-time. Sade's Love Deluxe, this time on CD though (it was only 8 dollars). I'll have some comments on the Kirk Franklin CD later.

I'll be leaving in a few short hours, on the greyhound bus, to a southern state. Promises to be quite an unenjoyable bus ride...I'll be gone for 5 days. I may do an update on Tues when I return. If not, have a wonderful holiday and you bammas can start leaving comments too...lol.

I leave you with the video for "Love Bizarre" by Shelia E.

Enjoy

We Have Sound.....

Not too long ago, someone told me about a show they went to where they saw an artists named Tom Vek. This person was ranting and raving about Tom Vek and how excellent he was. Now...this person is also a huge Nine Inch Nails fan, so I was not in a hurry to jump aboard the bandwagon (just jokes KM, just jokes).

So when I finally got a chance to hear his debut project We Have Sound, I was floored. The 24 year old London resident, combines indie rock, punk and electronic elements to make one of the better releases I have heard this year. Hopefully more people will begin to check for him.

Love, Peace, and SOOOOOOOOOOOUL

Since I'll be gone all weekend in the mountains, with about a 100 teenagers (sounds kinda Michael Jackson-ish), here is some video of a Soul Train Line.

Some of this is straight hillarious.

Be back on Monday....

Deborah Bond Show/ Say You Will

Soooo, Friday I went to the Black Cat for a show. My gurl Deborah Bond was headlining the show. I've posted a few of her tracks here before (look in the archives). Opening the show was Bilal Salaam (I missed his part, and I have no clue who he is) and Angela Johnson.

Angela Johnson is formerly of Cooley's Hot Box. She has a really nice voice and really good songs, but everything was really....safe. Kinda tame.... I was expecting more, especially in light of Deborah's show, which was all out massively insane energy. I guess there are limits to how far the opening act can go. Plus she was seated at the keyboard the entire time. Having said all that, I will check for more of her solo stuff. Her new release is called Got To Let It Go.

Deborah's set was off the hook. She is wild on stage. She couldnt stand still to save her life. Dancing all over the stage. Dancing with the audience. The band, Third Logic is dope too. Saxaphone, flute, accustic guitar, congos, the whole nine....Think there was a Tuba on stage as well...lol. Plus some sexy back-up singers too. And forget all that pretty stuff. They busted out with a Funkadelic song. Thats when I knew it was on for real, for real. My favorite part of the show had to be when she sang "This Is Me" although I had the always troubling dilemna of how to sing the female part of the song. Do you change it to male parts or sing the female parts and hope nobody is looking at you??....decisions decisions....lol.

Other than coming home smelling like an ash tray....it was a good night. 2 snaps up...IN A CIRCLE!

***************************************************************************************

The song of the day is from Sly and the Family Stone. From the 1974 album Small Talk, which has some (in my opinon) spectacular moments, however is overlooked in favor of the group's earlier, more classic material.

Talk Show Host

It has been called one of the greatest b-sides ever. Radiohead's "Talk Show Host" was the b-side to "Street Spirit [Fade Out]" (1995). It was also included on the Soundtrack to the movie William Shakespeare's Romeo + Juliet (1996). Pre-Ok Computer, I dig the softer sound, especially in light of what some of their work sounds like now.

So I figured that with my rent for my new place being paid in advance, I'd have plenty of money to buy CD's and I can end the CD purchasing drought (which now stands at over 2 months). Well, I havent been so lucky. Other bills have surfaced. Grown up stuff. I did however get my hands on the new Fionna Apple CD today. I'll withhold comment on that until I give it a few more listens.

Discover Me

The Eddie Kendricks post got me thinking about David Ruffin, plus with last weeks BET 25th Anniversary New Edition performance where they brought Bobby Brown back, I was hearing on the radio that it was Ruffin-esque (I didnt see it).

This is from 1976, the same year as the Kendricks song posted below.

Close

The song for the day is by Telepopmusik. Its called "Close".

I've been listening to this same song for about 30 minutes now. Its quite mesmorizing. You may remeber Telepopmusik for their song "Breathe" which was used in a automobile advertisement campaign on TV a few years ago. "Close" is from their new album Angel Milk, which was release a few months ago., and features one of the more peculiar album covers I've seen in a minute (and thats saying alot) . A man in a panda suit playing a trumpet in a forest....

yeah...

He's A Friend

So I'm finally in my new place (PRAISE THE LORD!!). Spent the whole weekend moving boxes and crates and heavy furniture. I did happen to set up my turntables, and the first record I put on....a record I bought in May and never listened to until yesterday.

Eddie Kendricks, member of the Temptations, with his 1976 solo release "He's A Friend". I didnt go to church sunday cuz of the move, so this was my church.

And in case anyone wants to see what music addiction looks like....

Unfortunately....this isn't all....
Don't be like me kids...
